01/17/2003 Entry: "Still singin'"
Well, it's very late but I am still singing =o) It was a total surprise dh coming home today, a very very welcome one...this trip was only for two weeks but felt like a lot longer for some reason. I guess he hadn't been gone for that long of time for a while...well, okay not since being gone from April through September lol We were all actually still sleeping when he snuck in. I had prayed all night long, I woke up in my sleep praying...about a lot of things, but one of them was for him to hurry home. I was missing him so much. And then when I saw him, he was all framed in the doorway by the light coming from behind him, as we keep our room really dark--well, I will tell you normally it would have scared me half to death seeing a man standing there lol I mean I wasn't EXPECTING him--but the truth is I was expecting him...I don't really know how to explain it other than I wasn't surprised he was home, and when I saw him standing there I just thanked God. I got what had to of been the most awesome hug in the whole world, and before long the kids discovered Daddy was home and we had a bedfull of happy faces, huggles, snuggles, kissies, and laughter. Some days I could live if I never got anything other than that
Well, since Daddy was home we had to make our trip to Walmart. Now I know most people will just fall apart over this...but my kids have had these gift cards from my Mamaw since about 2 weeks before Christmas. In a "mean parent" thing we don't let the kids use these until after Christmas--so they don't waste their money on things people have already gotten them--or spoil some surprises WE might have planned for them. (and lest anyone think our motivation is really mean--there's another reason below) So anyway, each of the kids had their gift card, plus B had another card from being the top popcorn seller in his Cub Scout Pack, and R had gotten about $35 in birthday money...so well, my kids went to the store WELL funded!! Now here's the other reason why we usually make the kids wait for these things--and it really is for their own good! The kids used their money and bought at least two and in some cases THREE times the toys they could have if they spent their money before Christmas. Why? Because Walmart is notorious for their after-Christmas clearance sales! B bought several power ranger figures that were normally $10 each for $4.99...C bought the cutest little Barbie roller coaster toy that was nearly $30 for only $10...and R, my super duper bargain finder found this doll, she's called "Lemonade Lisa" and she makes real lemonade, she got her for $10, and we've already enjoyed quite a lot of lemonade this evening. Of course we had to LEARN the hard way how much to mix and whatnot, but this doll REALLY makes it herself...it's cute in a scary kinda dolls will rule the world one day way.
SO...my house looks like Christmas all over again...which is funny because everyone pretty much knows my children have pretty much a TON of toys...and here's me with my Mom on the phone earlier this week...right...so we're talking about money...and how we are really trying to get on track financially...uhhuh...so she says well, you could stop buying them so many toys...and I'm thinking...wow...I don't think we have bought them too much lately, you know...and she's all like "c'mon you know I remember you being here right before Christmas and my whole living room being covered with toys where they had gotten so many new things"...and you know...I'm sitting there stumped trying to remember when I bought them a roomfull of toys...and just can't place it...but funny you mention it Momma...I remember YOU taking them shopping at Walmart and the Dollar Tree and filling up the trunk FULL of stuff...eh? ROFL My Mom is so great, I wish everyone could have the chance to meet her! She fell into the biggest fit of the giggles as you ever heard when she realized the big terrible toy fiasco was NOT done by ME, but by HER....LOLOL All that said, the big toy fiasco we're experiencing right now is not by my hand either--it's by the most generous hearts of those who love my children so dearly, and by my son working so hard in Scouts, and my daughter having a big birthday where family remembered and sent her a little something in the cards. I dunno what's a parent to do anyway...other than deal with the Christmas after Christmas living room mess for a few days in the New Year. Hey my kids are so cute with new toys I don't have any regrets. Now dh...he might cause he's gonna have to take all these boxes, zip ties, wires, styrofoam, plastic, rubberbands, and other packaging to the dumpster tomorrow lol poor guy. On a more serious note, if you happen to work for one of those toy companies putting the wire ties or plastic zip ties onto toys--please...STOP!!!!!!! I think we could fund some major change in some third world country with the proceeds from the plastic and wire used for these as they have more than TRIPLED in the last year on EVERY toy you buy. It really is one of my few pet peeves.
I know you needed to know that.
It's bedtime here, I hope everyone I love is sleeping peacefully right now.
Be blessed as I will send blessings heavenward! ~A

Yep, I'm guilty of buying the toys for the grandkids. I just have a weakness when it comes to seeing their faces all lit up when they come and ask, "grandma can I have this"? and I say "yes, honey, you can". I'm singing right along with you now that your dh is home. Thank God for his safe arrival! Mom
