01/19/2003 Entry: "Who won the best paint job? eh?"
Yes my friends it would be our dear B! WHOOO HOO!! His pinewood derby car was so totally cool, that it was practically freezing. Of course, the truly impressive thing about this presentation is the fact that last night about 10:00 pm dh and B took said pinewood derby car out to the backyard to put the final touch on. That would be the glossy coat finish. Oh yeah...this was going to make the surface look like glass. I should mention here that dh actually said something to the effect of "you know, the car looks really good without the gloss, maybe we should leave it off".........umm...you know that still small voice that sometimes weasles its way out and says something and then you just do that "NAH!" thing...shrug it off and think what a totally absurd idea? Yeah...well...sometimes maybe you should LISTEN to that voice...sometimes maybe it's the voice of GOD telling you to not go down that path as it leads to certain...or okay maybe "near" destruction...get my drift? Yeah well, that is something dh and I have yet to master.
So...the boys were outside for about 45 seconds before dh comes running in yelling at the top of his lungs, grabbing the blow dryer and emitting a string of illogical rantings...I picked up a few of the words and prepared to dial 911 because if someone wasn't hurt, then it wouldn't be long before someone WAS. Okay, I assess the situation and determine that some combination of chemicals in all of the many layers of paint that has been applied to the car has some how caused a reaction with the gloss finish--causing the paint on the car to basically melt off of the car. Dripping puddles of red, blue, black, silver...My dh is not one to fester in the moment so he calmed down pretty quickly and by this time I was going into full panic mode. In trying to calm me down he actually says "hey, it kinda looks cool"...YEAH if you are trying to emulate a CIRCUS on wheels it does...or like a puddle of paint...maybe...but no, that's not what we are shooting for...at all.
So a quick run to the 24 hour Walmart (I love them) had me with red paint in hand. Now keep in mind the car had been SPRAY painted. Uhhuh..yeah...well, of course the red we got didn't "exactly" match the red on the car...so there's no "touching" up here, it's paint it all or nothing...I painted it all. So at 2:00 am this morning I sat with a feeling of accomplishment as I had done the impossible, well, WE had done the impossible, as while I was painting, knowing that if my hand was too shaky the car would never dry in time--I prayed constantly, and the Lord steadied my hand. Together, we transformed a puddle of paint back into the coolest spider man car you'd ever see.

Check it out:

Yahhh...cool huh? So after all that it did turn out so good, and B was so proud, he really did work hard on that car, and he was so upset last night thinking it was ruined. To top it off we ranked 4th, which means even though we didn't put alot of thought into it, the car ran pretty fast too! Next year maybe we'll make an effort to be fast and bring home another trophy! =o)
We did decide that next year B will be old enough to do alot more of the work on his own...so dh and B will both be building a car--B's for the Pack race, and dh's for the family/sibling race that is held afterwards. (that one is just for fun)
After the race we went to dinner, and then to my favorite store in the world...Books a Million. I could LIVE in that store, and so could my kids! We were there for two hours!
Now we are off to turn my dining room table back into a dining room, as it's function for the last month has been a workshop!
Be blessed! ~A
