01/27/2003 Entry: "Lions, Tigers...bears..."

Oh my! A day filled with animals we had! First it was a discussion with C about what animals like bananas (monkeys and gorillas I am told)...and animals who like fish (bears, birds, alligators & crocodiles I am informed)...animals who like berries (bears and birds)...animals who eat grass and hay (horses, zebras, and koala bears)...yup my 3 year old is ready for a trip to the zoo methinks. She is begging so we are going to see if we could make a trip there sometime very soon!

Then we have played with our turtle--a res turtle, a red eared slider--he's a cutie patootie I tell ya. We cleaned his house (a 29 gallon aquarium), fixed his light so it would work better, cleaned his shell and basically terrorized him (that's what we like to refer to as "playing with the turtle"). My dh has suddenly become absolutley fascinated with this turtle (his name is Terkois, we call him Terk)--I think he's bored but he says nah...but he did just have a 4 day weekend...interesting how his fascination came about just NOW! He has found a website about turtles where he has been reading and stuff. Wanna see? Go here and see what you never knew you wanted to know nor needed to know about turtles. In all fairness, my dh could have some other really annoying fascinations, so I am pretty happy that he's enthusiastic over one of the many family pets!! (for anyone who doesn't know we have two cats, a plethora of fishes , 2 crawdads (a female named Tot and a male named Tut), & our Terk--we don't count the lizards who sneak in now and again but we do study them quite a bit!)

Otherwise today we went to Fazoli's (if you don't have these they are "fast food" italian and are SO yummy!) to eat lunch and make the reservations for the Blue and Gold banquet. They are giving us an OUTSTANDING deal on the whole thing. $5.50 per person for choices of up to three of their pastas (we will be serving the spagetti with meat sauce, fettucine alfredo, and lasagna), salad, unlimited breadsticks and sweet tea. They will be bringing it out, setting it up, serving, cleaning up...and they will be supplying all of the paper products, silverware, and everything! YAY! I'm happy to have that out of the way. Now we just have to settle on decorations and we are good to go.

After our lunch we went to the NEW (drum roll) LIBRARY!!!!!!!! YEEEEEHAW!!!!! Can I just tell you there are no proper words that I could put here which would adequately convey how totally thrilled I am with this new libarary? Can I tell you that this is *not* a "normal" library but is the MOTHER of all LIBRARIES! It is a full 2 stories high...has a WHOLE seperate section for the children's library with children sized tables and chairs...and most importantly bathrooms! The fiction section is seperate from the rest of the library as well. Then upstairs they have the reference section which has tons of tables and chairs, a closed of "quiet study room", and a technology room. This library is amazing...and it especially welcomed since our last library was actually in the shopping center with "Big Lots" and was basically the size of a Payless Shoe Store...actually maybe the space was a Payless before who knows...anyways, it wasn't much of a library and there definately wasn't much room for the kidlets...so we didn't get there too often. I think the new Library will be a weekly thing for us from now on!! Oh and the actual "feel" of this place is breathtaking! Outside there is this enormous stone column...and at the bottom of it in a circular pattern there are tiles with authors names on them...at the top of the column are books...inside there are huge stone pillars...and there are stone archways...one of them has the quote which I was moved by today from a wonderful statesman Frederick Douglass--"Once You Learn To Read You Will Be Forever Free"...it is actually etched into the stone. The whole place is amazing, and I am so thankful that it is OUR local library! What a blessing it has already been, as we brought home two backpacks full of books! We will be reading the novel "Dr. Doolittle" as a family and the kids picked out some awesome books to read over the next few weeks! You can see pictures of the new library here. They didn't have any REALLY cool ones...bummer...next time we go I'll take some good ones for ya'll!

The only other event today was the beginning of our new chore system which is AMAZING and I am so excited about. So far my children are absolutely enthusiastic about helping around the house. I'll let you know how long it lasts LOL I am using a program dh and I put together using this program and a book/program called "The 21 Rules of this House" combined to encourage the children about personal responsiblity both for their cleanliness and helpfulness but also about how they treat others and such. In reality we don't have alot of problems in these areas but I can see I want to set these ideals in motion before anything comes into play--as no doubt puberty will bring with it many trying times! Hopefully these few small things will make a difference!

ROFL I am dying here My dh just finished up all of the Terk/Tank stuff...he's standing there after disinfecting everything (you know, salmonella) and he says "oh he's happy! he's frolicing!" ROFL I'm like "how do you know he's frolicing?" He says "because he's happy, you wanna see him frolicing?" I'm like no...and then he quietly says "or maybe he's having a panic attack...because he's doing laps around the aquarium" lol I hope he's frolicing for my dh's sake, he's really into the turtle, and in the process of all of this nurturing for our turtle we have discovered that our female crawdad, Tot (as in Tiny Tot)--has eggs! We might be having some crawbabies soon! Okay I doubt they'll be that cute!

Here's a couple of pics of our zoo...
